CentroidCentroid: Object's center of gravity or center of mass
An object is in a state of equilibrium if balanced along its centroid. Centoid Location
|
Square
The centroid of a square is located at half its base and half its height. Triangle The centroid of a right triangle is located at 1/3 of its height and 1/3 of its base (these are distances from the right angle). Semi-Circle The centroid of a semi-circle is located by the formula to the right and on its line of symmetry. |
Structural Member PropertiesMoment of Inertia (I): a mathematical property of a cross section that gives important information about how that cross-sectional area is distributed about a centroidal axis.
Layman's Terms: Stiffness of an object related to its shape Most of the time, a higher moment of inertia produces a greater resistance to deformation. |
